Field of Battle game at ConquestSF

It's been years since I GM'ed a convention game (last one was probably 4 years ago when I ran my Big Trouble in Afrika game. This time around I was jazzed (or press ganged) by all the Napoleonics that we've been doing that I decided to give it a go.

The Napoleonic rage has been with our little group (Jeff and Freddy being the other two) for a while now. I decided early this year to start (ahem) another rebasing project of my Nappies to mount them on 3"x1.5" large stands with about 14~16 infantry in 2 lines, or about 5~6 cav per base. This gives me the massed look, and it's easier to move. The big game I put on earlier in the year (A Croanne game using FoB as well) was fun enough that it convinced Jeff (and even Freddy to convert to the same basing scheme.

Field of Battle (FoB) is also knows as Piquet (Lite) (or more accurately PK streamlined) is now my favorite set of rules. It kept most of PK's good parts (chaos, unpredictability, ability to simulate certain fog of war aspects not possible in other rulesets), and yet removed some parts of PK that gets on people's nerves (i.e. impetus swings being the prime example). The biggest changes are:
1) Impetus are now evenly distributed. Two sides roll off still, and the difference is the impetus you get, except that EACH side now get that same amount of impetus. The difference being that the winner of the roll off gets to pick going first or 2nd.
2) impetus are used for card turning only. There are no spending pips for each unit's action anymore.

The result is that there are less fiddly bits, with some sacrifice on details. and best of all, the rule set moves pretty fast (at least once the rules are grasped) and it's good for multiplayer games (since everyone on one side can move/shoot at the same time). A prefect vehicle for a convention game.

The scenario I picked was a fictitious scenario set in 1809. basically the Russians joined the Austrians (because I have painted Russians), so on the Allied side we have about 5 Divisions of Russians and Austrians, which stumbled upon a out-scouted French Corps. Initially only 2 Fr divisions are on the board holding 2 villages. Two more divisions are coming on after the first French movement card. There's also vague promise of the Imperial Guarding making its appearance if things gets desperate (basically GM's fudge to balance a scenario as the game progresses...)

Well things got desperate pretty early on. A combination of Fr not drawing movement cards and the Allies rolling good on movement means that the Allied center crashed through the French center and shattered it pretty early on before the French wing can come to the rescue. Couple that with some bad card distro (i.e. all the French movement cards are clumped at the bottom of the deck, and just before they can get to it both side tied on a roll off which means that the turn is over and the deck is reshuffled).

At the end by the time the French Imperial Guard showed up with Napoleon the French main army already ran out of Morale chits. Not even charge of the Grenadier Guard Cavalry can beat back the Russian offense.

All in all, not the Ideal game scenario, but most of the Allies has a great time at least (not surprisingly, two of the French player lost heart and left early, the other two players being diehard PK players who can take the bad turn of cards with more understanding). I might have even made a new convert or two.

Next project: more colonials with these rules which is a period even more suited due to the wild swing nature of colonial warfare anyway...
