Update

Hello everyone, sorry about the lack of entries. Here's a brief update on what's going on in Milton's world....

1) Real World: has been a blur the last few month: I have a new job starting the beginning of Nov, Linda has a new position within her company, the house remodeling drags on (suppose to finish before thanksgiving '07, and now at end of February it is still not done), Somewhere in there I was also serving in the local grand jury. this explains a bit about the lack of update...

2) "new" periods: Due to influence from friend's kids, I got into 40k .."Uncle Milton, oh wise-one, please show us how to do this miniature gaming thing...". I bought the Space Marine megabox in late October, and by the new year I finished painting the entire box! (Probably a speed record for me). They still haven't seen any action yet as the kids are more into the modeling/painting aspect than playing, oh well...

3) Sporadic Flames of War game still happens on occasion. I am putting the finishing touches on my 2nd army (A German Grenadier company), so now I can put on a game having both sides. With all the flack about the FoW rules, I am still enjoying it as a simple old fashioned WW2 system.

4) The latest craze is Field of Glory: We tried the rules out last night and a writeup will be coming shortly. Its release has triggered the ancient gamer in me, so will be taking a look at some competitor rulesets (Armati 2, Tactica 2, Ancient Warfare, and Crusader are all waiting their turn on the table).

Happy New Year!

Sorry about the lack of entries in the last few months, but life's been hectic. Basically from about the time of thanksgiving we've been experiencing:

- Moving out of our house (becaue we want to knock it down for a complete rebuild)
- Dealing with an architect to get the new house designed.
- A new job
- Getting a new computer setup

So hopefully my lack of entries can be forgiven!

Problem with Comments

I have one user (at least) saying that there's an issue entering comments here. So far I've received one comment from someone other than myself so I know it works at least for some. Currently I have no internet access from home so any debugging activity is whatever cycle I can squeeze out from work. So if you have comments but can't enter them, I still would like to hear from you. You can email me at msoong@yahoo.com.

Registered Comment feature enabled

I have finally got commenting enabled. Now you have to register through typekey in order to get an account, then you should be able to log into any typekey based blogs and enter comments without hinderance. Give it a try! I am dying to find out what somepeople think about my blog (or if anyone is even reading it)...

Selling and Buying a House

Life's been hectic, having just gone through a house sale/buy cycle in the most vicious housing market in the country. I am now in limbo, living with Mom, with all my possession in storage.

Linda and I weren't even thinking about selling our house (just some vague grumbling about an add-on since I am tired of sharing a single bathroom with wife unit). At a party our realtor told us that our house must be worth 30% to 40% more than when we bought it 3 years ago. Not believing a single word of this, we kinda agreed to have her sell it for us almost as a dare.

What followed has got to be a speed record of some kind. We decided to put the house on sale on a weekend. The next 4 days is frantic cleanup (throw out junk and make the house "showable"). Agent walkthrough is that friday. Open house is the weekend, and we are taking offers the wed after.

Come offer day I sat in the office with our agent by our side, while the buying agents (all six of them, multiple offer is alive and well) come in to present their case. At the end of the day we get to pick out a luck winner. A pretty harrowing experience having all these well dressed agent types trying to sell to us (us engineer type is pretty clueless). That is until we realized that we'll have to be on the OTHER side when we are trying to buy a place.

The buying part was concluded about 2 weeks later (and that is open houses every weekend from 1:00PM until 4:30PM, plus countless hours on the internet looking at for sale listings). Since part of the buying settlement stated that the current owner get to stay there rent free until middle of June, we get to move in with Mom into the house that I grew up in. Most of our stuff is sitting in storage.

PS, and we are now completely broke. So no more game buying, lead buying, or book buying (beyond the one book I am currently reading). Jetting to London is also out of the question.

Coming soon, part II, the remodel....

Comments from unregistered users

After Chris pointed out that my TypeKey enabled "registered user only" comment feature is not working properly, I spent a good 30 min on why this is so. After browsing through the TypeKey support forum I found that it's actually a bug in the blog program which I'd rather not deal with. I decided to settle on the "All comments require moderator approval" option. Since the volume of comments on this site is minimal this should work for now. Give it a shot...

Comments

I am getting sick and tired of my comment fields getting spammed, so I have turned on the feature that requires one to register with the site first. Let's see if that fixes things...

Masthead

WebX.gif Here's the old Mandarin's Corner graphics from the old Savage and Soldier editorial page. When I get the chance I'll put up this picture as the masthead for Mandarin's Manor...

A new blog

Welcome everyone! I got tired of my old AOL Journal based blog that was hosted on here, AOL pays my salary and all that, and the AOL Journal has some cool features (such as the ability to enter blog entry via a AIM chat window, and you can record a voice message on your blog, etc.) but the lack of some very basic features (i.e. categories) really irritated me. So last night I decided on the blog software that I want (movabletype seems to be a full featured blogger with everything that I wanted), so here I am!
I'll be migrating my old stuff from AOL to here gradually. Hopefully I can have new entries here in a more frequent basis... Stay tuned.

This Week's Activity

There are too much work stuff going on this week, so we have to cancel the TCS meet. On my spare time I have finished most of the Cyberboard game box for the new Phalanx card driven wargame: "Age of Napoleon". I have two more scenarios to do and I'll be done! (now all I need to do is to find a US distributor for the game and I am done).

Another game I want to try is Decision's new card based ACW game: Battle Cries of Freedom. It looks promising, and you get all the colors and major decisions of the ACW in a deck of 300 cards. The game can be finished within 3 hours which is also a plus...

Also just finished (re)painting my 15mm Napoleonic guns that has the colors all screwed up by the painting service. Now all I have to do is rebase them, and I'll have enough figures to refight Fuentes d'Onoro and Friedland (and probably most other Pennisular battles as well)...
